Lok Sabha 2019 constituency: BJP won from Banda seat in last election

Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of members to Parliament at 80, will go to polls in all the seven phases of the Lok Sabha election 2019. Votes will be counted on May 23.

The Banda parliamentary constituency is in Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh and held by several parties over the years.

The Congress has won four times, the Bharatiya Janata Party thrice, Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi Party and CPI twice each in the elections held 15 times in the Banda Lok Sabha seat.

In the 1999 Lok Sabha election, the BSP’s Ram Sajeevan won the seat and Shyama Charan Gupta of the Samajwadi Party registered a victory in the 2004 polls. The SP was successful again in Banda in the 2009 election after RK Singh Patel was elected from the constituency. Patel lost to Bhairon Prasad Mishra of the BJP in the last general election from Banda where Kurmis, Jatavs and Khushwahas are the influential communities in the constituency.

This year, Bal Kumar Patel has jumped ship from the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP to Congress and has been nominated by the grand old party to contest from the seat. He also the brother of Shiv Kumar Dadua, a dacoit who was gunned down by the special task force of the state more than a decade ago. Shiv Kumar ‘Dadua’ used to issue printed ‘firmans’ for candidates of parties he supported. He used to intimidate the rivals who refrained from campaigning. The winning candidates, in turn, extended protection and partnership in government projects.
