The PM’s speech in Toronto contained the analogy that while India and Canada growing separately would be a2 + b2, when joined together in friendship they would be (a+b)2 which equals a2 +2ab+b2, with the synergy giving an extra 2ab.

On being quizzed, a DMK MP said that party MPs were donating a part of their pay hikes to build a memorial to A. Raja, as a token of appreciation for the great work he had done for the party.

Make it personal

Would Manmohanji, like Obama, don his swimming trunks and frolic in the Arabian Sea to show that the danger from our little oil spill too was over? Manas Chakravarty writes.

Free-for-all country

Today is a day to celebrate our freedom. I know that many of us will say we could have done better in the last 63 years, that we could have achieved this and accomplished that. But today is not a day to carp and cavil, but an occasion to remember and cherish the amazing outburst of freedom that we have witnessed since independence, writes Manas Chakravarty.

Let’s contest this

Who could have imagined that the Commonwealth Games would be so exciting? Never has any sporting competition been so much fun, never has it been so widely and avidly followed. Games organisers from Beijing to London to Johannesburg are enviously asking just one question: how on earth did we manage it?

Truly faking it

The first thing I did this morning after faking up, sorry waking up, was to make a cup of tea, adulterated as usual with cashew husks. I like a lot of fake milk with my fake tea, the detergents in the milk give it a unique flavour. Manas Chakravarty writes.

A real class act

Last week’s star was undoubtedly Jyoti Devi, MLC. As she twirled and flung those heavy flower pots with practised ease in front of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, appreciative gasps went up from an awestruck nation watching the show open-mouthed on TV. Manas Chakravarty writes.

Uppily ever after

At first glance, Little Jack Horner appears to be depressed. Why else does he mope in a corner? Closer investigation shows, however, that Jack, with all this talk of Horners and thumbs and plums, is either playing out his erotic fantasies or merely likes rhyming words. Manas Chakravarty writes.

On your marks

A 10 on 10 for the class test will not fetch you ‘very good’ or ‘well done’ from your teachers. Instead, for the next one month, your teacher’s remark would be: “You have scored a goal!”…All the topics….will be in some way related to football, writes Manas Chakravarty.

Surreal Madrid

A group of journalists today visited the villages in Bangladesh where the football clashes had taken place. As their boat chugged upstream past the paddy fields, they saw that the mango, palm and jackfruit trees lining the river were all draped with Manchester United flags. Manas Chakravarty writes.

Dum-dum-Didi-didi

As the end of over three decades of Communist rule in West Bengal looms nearer, many people in the state are worried. Habits acquired during those decades would be hard to give up. Babus in Writers’ Buildings are a particularly nervous lot, writes Manas Chakravarty.

They won’t be back

Stephen Hawking is probably the brainiest guy on the planet, but is he right about aliens? His visions about aliens terrorising us puny earthlings from great big ships is obviously the result of seeing too many movies like Independence Day, writes Manas Chakravarty.

Howzzat, Shashi?

Lalit comes in to bowl the next one and, oh my god, it’s a real juicy bouncer, one that we haven’t seen the likes of for a very long time. If I remember right, the last time we had such a bouncer from Lalit was last year, when he knocked Chidambaram out cold before scooting off to South Africa, writes Manas Chakravarty.
