Tripura election results: BJP’s Pranajit Singha Roy retains his seat from Radhakishorepur

Counting to elect the new government for the state of Tripura is underway where the Bharatiya Janata Party is set to retain its power as it has won 29 out of the 60 seats in the election, as per Election Commission's latest trends. Among the key constituencies, the saffron party has retained its Radhakishorepur seat where MLA Pranajit Singha Roy has defeated his closest rival Srikanta Datta of Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) by a margin of 7,414 votes.

Sitting MLA Pranajit Singha Roy secured a total of 24,421 votes this time.

Datta, who was also Roy's closest rival during the last 2018 assembly election, lost to him by nearly 5,000 votes then. The party was seen celebrating its lead in the ongoing counting at its Agartala office earlier, as the number games favoured the saffron party since the very early trends.

Five candidates contested from this seat in which CPIM(M) had fielded Partha Karmakar who only managed about 1,000 votes while two other independent candidates, Bibhu lal Dey, Ratan Debbarma got about 500 votes collectively.

A triangular contest was on cards between the BJP, old rivals Congress-CPIM which joined hands this time to defeat the BJP, and Tipra Motha, seen as a kingmaker in case of a hung assembly scenario.

The election in the state was held on February 16 that recorded 89.95 percent voting including 2.19 percent votes polled through postal ballots.
