One killed, three injured after police van runs over them

PUNE: One person died and three others were injured after a speeding police jeep rammed into a group of four people waiting along the roadside on Karad-Dhebewadi road in Satara district. The incident was reported on Sunday at around 11 pm in the Karad rural area.

The accused has been identified as Shankar Khetmar, who was driving the police jeep. It is alleged that he was under the influence of alcohol while driving.
According to Karad tehsil police, sugar cane cutter workers were waiting for pick-up vehicles on Sunday night along the roadside near Kusur village in Karad tehsil. At that time the driver of a police jeep, heading towards Dhebewadi lost control of the vehicle and crushed four people.
The injured were shifted to Krishna Hospital where Sujal Uttam Kambale (18) resident of Kolewadi in Karad was declared dead.
VT Patil, police inspector at Karad tehsil police station said, “The driver lost control of the vehicle as a result of which one person died and three others sustained injuries in this accident.’’
Patil further said that after an investigation, the driver was arrested, and his blood samples were sent for laboratory tests to ascertain if he had consumed alcohol.
A case has been registered at Karad tehsil police station under IPC sections 304 a (Causing death by negligence), 279 (Driving or riding a vehicle in a negligent manner), 338 (Causes grievous hurt to any person), 185 (Individual driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol), and 304 (ii) (Knowledge that death may be caused by act).
