The Women Reservation Bill in India is expected to increase women's representation in the national and state legislatures by 2029. In Maharashtra, the bill will ensure at least 95 women legislators in the state legislative assembly, compared to the current number of 24. However, there is concern that many of these women may come from established political families, serving as proxies for their husbands or male relatives. The state already has eight women Lok Sabha MPs, most of whom belong to political families.
