The move also comes in the backdrop of government’s bid to increase the number of police personnel in the state to meet the needs of the state’s growing population.

On February 27 this year, speaking at the closing ceremony of the “Bihar Police Week”, chief minister Nitish Kumar had expressed his wish to increase the number of policemen in Bihar from 165 to 170 per lakh of the population. The Bihar cabinet had, on December 20, 2022, approved the recruitment of 75, 543 police personnel, of them 48,447 through direct recruitment.

He said the advertisement regarding these posts would be issued soon by the Board and Commission.

On March 30 this year, the Centre had informed the Parliament that the current police-public ratio in the country stood at 152.80 per lakh of population.

Sources in Bihar Police headquarters said that even if 21, 391 personnel were recruited under the plan, the ratio would not reach the national level of 152, although it would be around 150 per lakh.

Since 2010, Bihar government has appointed 8,200 sub-inspectors and 62,136 constables.
