CPM intends to fight Tripura assembly polls with Congress and TIPRA Motha

Eyeing the upcoming Tripura assembly elections scheduled to be held in February, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) on Wednesday announced its intention to fight the polls together with Congress and TIPRA Motha parties.

TIPRA Motha headed by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, is currently in power in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

The party, however, didn’t announce anything about seat sharing except that the sharing will be done following ground realities.

“This coming Assembly polls is crucial not only for Tripura but for the interests of democracy and rule of law and Constitution. This is important in the context of northeast, development and also for national politics,” said Yechury after a one-day long meeting of the CPM state committee held on Tuesday.

Politburo member Prakash Karat, former Tripura chief minister and lone Politburo member Manik Sarkar, CPM state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury including other leaders also attended the meeting.

Yechury added that defeat of BJP is necessary and should not be allowed to come to power for second term in the state.

“Our focus is to seek unity of all the secular forces to ensure defeat of the BJP for the sake of people of Tripura and rule of law and Constitution,” he said.

Reacting to CPM’s announcement, Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman said, “ Any democratic and secular party will say so and try their best to bring all the political parties together for the sake of people of the country especially Tripura and defeat the communal and anti-people government.”

He further added that the Pradesh Congress Committee president and other seniors will take decision about the seat sharing and hoped that the decision would be for benefit of the people.

TIPRA Motha chairman Pradyot Kishore didn’t comment on the alliance issue.
