Azad Samaj Party and Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan sustained a bullet wound on his waist and was rushed to a private hospital after unidentified car-borne assailants fired at him in Deoband town of Saharanpur district in western Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday evening, police said.

“The assailants were in a car and opened fire on Azad’s SUV. A bullet grazed his abdomen. He has been admitted to a hospital,” superintendent of police (City) Abimanyu Manglik said, according to a PTI report.
The incident took place at Gandhi Colony when Azad was returning in an SUV after attending a programme, police said.

Police said that the the assailants fled the spot amid the chaos caused by gunshots, adding that a search operation has been launched to nab the accused.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Bhim Army and party supporters gathered at the hospital where additional security personnel were deployed.
Azad’s party had an alliance with the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal in western Uttar Pradesh. Together, they defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Khatauli assembly by-election in Muzaffarnagar district last year.
