College of Physicians (CPS) faces action over alleged anomalies in its colleges and courses as the state medical education department sent another notice to appear for a hearing on May 16. The notice mentioned that CPS must submit guidelines under which teachers are appointed and details of health infrastructure. CPS had moved the court after receiving previous notices on February 8, March 14, March 21, April 5, April 13 and April 18. The previous notices had stated that two colleges offering courses of specialisation by CPS were closed, 73 refused inspections and there were deficiencies in the remaining 45.

The seventh notice issued on May 9 also said that the hearings could not be held as the CPS had moved the court. The case, however, was dismissed.

The CPS has also been told to furnish details of health infrastructure like the number of beds and details of inspection of affiliated colleges.

The notice mentioned that the CPS must submit a list of guidelines under which teachers are appointed.

Medical education secretary Ashwini Joshi has also warned that if the CPS fails to appear for the hearing, it will be considered that they have nothing to say and action will be taken accordingly.

Previously, Joshi had sent notices on February 8, March 14, March 21, April 5, April 13 and April 18.

The previous notices had stated that two colleges offering courses of specialisation by the CPS were found closed, 73 refused inspections and there were deficiencies in the remaining 45. The notice said this had an impact on the health system and also on the students.

Joshi has written two letters to the Union health secretary on the anomalies in the colleges where courses are run by the CPS.

The first letter was sent on January 23 to the Union government and a reminder was sent in February. In the letter, Joshi had said that CPS offers 1,028 seats in the state. Apart from government and private medical colleges, these courses are also being run in standalone hospitals without permission from the government.

Dr Girish Maindarkar, CPS president, said, “Our team will meet the medical education secretary and comply with whatever the government says.’’
