A Mumbai court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the pre-planned murder of a 17-year-old girl in April 2017. Although the prosecution could not establish the motive behind the killing, the court held the 30-year-old guilty due to the heinous nature of the crime, which involved 25 stab wounds and slitting the girl's neck. The accused was caught by two witnesses and arrested by police.

MUMBAI: The sessions court last week sentenced a man to life imprisonment for stabbing a 17-year-old girl to death in Santacruz in April 2017. The court held the 30-year-old guilty even though the prosecution could not establish the motive behind the murder.

The court said the heinous nature of crime, causing 25 stab injuries and slitting of the girl’s neck, clearly showed the intention of the accused to kill her and therefore the absence of evidence to suggest the motive behind committing the crime or the relationship between the accused and the victim was immaterial. The court said the motive or the nature of their relationship was possibly unknown to others.

“It cannot be said to be detrimental to the prosecution case,” additional sessions judge A Subramaniam said, while holding Khar resident Ambaji More guilty of killing Sofia Shaikh on April 9, 2017. The court said it was a cold-blooded, pre-planned murder of a young girl and with ferocity.

More was arrested after two passers-by chased him with the help of a traffic police. Two witnesses, Afsar Khan and Imran Sayyed had seen More sitting over the injured girl and stabbing her.

One of the witnesses claimed that he and his friend were walking towards Ambedkar Chowk between 8pm and 8:30pm when the accused assaulted the girl on the road and she was shouting for help.

The second witness had in his testimony informed the court that he was returning back to his house shortly after 8pm when he reached near Air force Hospital, he saw that one girl was lying on the ground and one man was sitting over her.

The witness further stated that when they went to rescue the girl, the accused was not moving. The witnesses tried to catch the accused, but he fled. Then with the help of a traffic police, More was caught and brought to the police station. The girl, meanwhile, was taken to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead. The court accepted the prosecution evidence and convicted More.
