DOMBIVLI: Even eight days after a 53-year-old man was injured, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) is yet to properly cover the manhole on a footpath on 90 Feet Road in Thakurli, Dombivli.
Sundaram Iyer, who was discharged from the hospital, went to check the drain and found it to be in the same condition, open and unsafe.
Last week, Iyer, who works as a station master with Central Railway (CR), went for a walk after dinner with his wife around 9.15pm when the incident happened. His wife was walking ahead of him when he suddenly fell into the manhole on the footpath near Balaji Angan residential building and suffered a deep cut on his thigh, requiring surgery and 17 stitches.
As the man was bleeding, he went to a nearby dispensary. However, the dispensary in charge asked him to get admitted as the bleeding did not stop.
Later, KDMC ward officer, Bharat Patil, had assured to look into the matter and cover the drain immediately. However, no action has been initiated yet.
“Despite me falling into the drain and suffering, the civic body has not done anything to the open manhole. When I got discharged, I decided to check it as I don’t want anyone else to fall into the manhole and suffer injuries,” Iyer said.
Moreover, the footpath where Iyer fell into the drain is located near Omkar International School and schoolchildren also use the pavement on a daily basis.
When contacted, Patil said, “Our engineer had initiated covering the uncovered drains in the locality. Three of them have already been covered. I will ask the engineer to again visit this place and cover all the open, uncovered or half covered drains.”
