A second Great Indian Bustard (GIB) chick has been born in one month at a breeding centre in Jaisalmer, according to officials. The chick was born to a naturally hatched couple that had been artificially created under a captive breeding programme aimed at conserving the critically endangered species. The birth raises hopes that the centre will be able to increase the GIB population, which has dropped by 75% in the last three decades to under 150. The Rajasthan state bird is listed as having Schedule-I protection under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and is also on the International Union for Conservation of Nature?s Red List.
