On March 23, a court in Surat convicted Gandhi in a defamation case and sentenced him to two years imprisonment, leading to his disqualification as a member of Parliament a day later
A criminal defamation complaint has been filed with a Haridwar court against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remark during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in January in which he described the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) as “21st century Kauravas”.

Lawyer Arun Bhadoria said he has filed the complaint on behalf of Kamal Bhadoria, who he said was an RSS volunteer. The court will take up the complaint on April 12, he added.
“We have filed the complaint under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), he added. The two provisions relate to criminal defamation and prescribe a maximum jail term of two years.
Arun said the complaint relates to Gandhi’s statement earlier in January in Kurukshetra. “He (Gandhi) compared the RSS with 21st century Kauravas by saying that they now wear khaki half pants, carry lathi in hand, and hold shakhas… and India’s 2-3 billionaires are standing with the Kauravas,” he said.
The complaint said Gandhi did not respond to a legal notice sent to the leader by Kamal Bhadoria on January 11.
On March 23, a court in Surat convicted Gandhi in a defamation case and sentenced him to two years imprisonment, leading to his disqualification as a member of Parliament a day later. Gandhi represented the Wayanad constituency in Kerala in the Lok Sabha.
