Punjab farmers reject MSP hike for kharif crops as ‘peanuts’

Farmers in Punjab have rejected the revised minimum support prices (MSPs) for kharif crops announced by the Indian government, with one critic calling them a "mere joke". The MSP for paddy (common) has been increased by INR143 ($1.93) per quintal, while MSP for Grade A paddy has increased by INR163 to INR2,203 per quintal. The highest increase of 10.4% in MSP was for moong at INR8,558 per quintal. Kirti Kisan Union secretary Santokh Singh Sandhu said farmers had been asking for an MSP that accounted for basic costs incurred on production and an additional 50% profit.
