The Government Railway Police have arrested a 22-year-old youth for wearing the uniform of an army Brigadier in Ambala Cantonment, officials said on Friday.

The accused was identified as Tushar Sharma, alias Jai, a resident of Delhi.

GRP officials said on Wednesday, Lipt Kumar, an ex-serviceman, stopped Sharma on suspicion while he was boarding Dadar Express (Amritsar-Mumbai 11058) at Ambala Cantonment railway station in the uniform.

Kumar suspected how a young man could be donning a Brigadier’s uniform with medals. As Sharma failed to justify his attire, he was handed over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF).

Sub-inspector Kulbir Singh from the RPF said on being questioned, Sharma shared he was posted with the Special Protection Group (SPG) and also showed the army canteen’s smart card in his mobile phone.

“However, he failed to submit any other address proof or identity card. The Movement Control Office (MCO) of the army and GRP were informed,” Singh said. The card and uniform were seized by the railway police.

A case under Section 140 (wearing garb or carrying token used by soldier, sailor or airman) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the GRP police station.

When the youth’s father, Bijender Sharma from Ghaziabad’s Loni, was contacted, he shared that his son was mentally unstable, SHO Dharambir Singh said.

“But the family had no documentary evidence to back his diagnosis or medication. The accused was later released on bail and handed over to the family on Friday,” the SHO said.
