Landslide blocks Shimla-Kalka highway near Solan for 5 hours

A landslide in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district on Monday morning brought traffic to a halt on the Shimla-Kalka national highway (NH5) near Shamlech village.

Officials said no casualty was reported in the incident that occurred around 7.30am near the Solan bypass.

Vehicles were seen stranded on both sides of the road and local police asked motorists to turn back and take the Old Barog route instead.

The administration deployed excavators and the stretch was subsequently cleared for traffic after five hours.

A total of 259 roads, including five national highways, have been closed in Himachal Pradesh following snow and rain in recent days.

A maximum of 237 roads were blocked in Lahaul and Spiti, nine in Kinnaur, five in Chamba, four in Kullu, two in Mandi, and one each in Shimla and Kangra districts, the state emergency operation centre said.

ADGP Nitish Kumar given additional charge of SIA director

CID Jammu and Kashmir additional director general of police Nitish Kumar was given the additional charge of the post of director State Investigation Agency (SIA). In an order by the home department, the government assigned Kumar the charge of SIA. “In the interest of administration, it is hereby ordered that Nitish Kumar, IPS, ADGP CID, Jammu and Kashmir, shall hold the charge of the post of Director, State Investigation Agency, in addition to his own duties, till further orders,” an order by principal secretary said. Kumar was promoted to the rank of ADGP from IG in December last year after his return from NIA in March where he was IG investigations in New Delhi. He served in Kashmir in various capacities fighting militancy and law and order issues. He served as DIG of south as well as north Kashmir after serving in the capacity of SSP in Pulwama and Anantnag districts.

Doda couple held with 35 gm heroin

Jammu Police on Monday arrested a notorious couple from Doda after recovering 34 gm heroin and 45,000 cash from their possession, according to officials. The accused have been identified as Junaid Qayoom and Shafia Tabussum from Doda. The duo had allegedly been selling drugs to the youth in Doda, police said. They have been booked under sections of the NDPS Act.

Rusted grenade found in Poonch, defused

Jammu A rusted mortar shell was found on the banks of a rivulet in Poonch district on Monday, police said. The mortar shell was spotted by a resident in the stream near a primary school in the Muglian area of Mendhar sector. Officials said a police team along with a bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot on receiving the information about the shell and defused it safely.
