The victim has been identified as Dr Vineeta Arora, a gynaecologist who used to practice on the ground floor of the house with her husband Dr Atul Arora. The victim also used to prepare cakes on order, and was baking on the first floor when five men entered the house, posing as customers. The men had covered their face with mufflers.

At the time of the incident, the victim’s elderly in-laws, husband and a domestic help were also present in the house.

The victim’s husband told the police that he was on the second floor of the house with his parents when he heard his wife’s screams. As he rushed to the first floor, he saw the men threatening his wife. On spotting Dr Atul, the robbers took out a gun and forcefully took him back to the second floor. There they beat him up and told him surrender all the cash and valuables present in the house.

Dr Atul said that he handed over about 1 lakh and some jewellery to the robbers.

Later, he managed to sneak out of the room through a second door and sought help from neighbours. By the time he returned, the accused had left with the valuables. When he went to the first floor, he saw his wife lying in a pool of blood.

Their domestic help, Madhu, told him that Dr Vineeta had tried to put up resistance following which the robbers attacked her on the head with a stick, killing her on the spot.

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage from the spot showed armed men coming in a Maruti Swift car and making their way to the first floor around 10pm.

Based on this footage, police were able to ascertain the car’s registration number and flash it across police control rooms. After sometime, they got information about the car passing through the Pehowa-Dand road. A car chase ensued during which fire was exchanged between both sides. One of the accused sustained a bullet injury in the leg during the encounter and was hospitalised while the rest were nabbed. Police have, however, not disclosed their names.

Kurukshetra superintendent of police (SP) Surinder Singh Bhoria said four of the accused belong to Kaithal district while one is from Aligarh of Uttar Pradesh.

Cops will be producing the accused in the court on Wednesday and seeking their remand for the recovery of recovery of weapons, cash and jewellery.

The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act.

Dr Vineeta Arora’s body has been sent for post-mortem.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) condemned the incident and clinics across the city observed a one-day bandh on Tuesday. IMA Kurukshetra president Dr Rakesh Bhardwaj said the incident has sent shockwaves across the city and steps should be taken to improve the safety of doctors.
