Elderly couple drowns as car plunges into canal in Ludhiana

An elderly couple died after their car fell into the Sirhind canal near Gurthali Bridge in Doraha on Thursday afternoon.
The victims have been identified as Gurmail Singh, 75, of Kartar Nagar of Moga and his wife Malkit Kaur, 72. The couple was returning to Moga from Doraha in their Maruti Suzuki Alto car.
Police fished out the bodies and the car from the canal with the help of divers and informed their family members about the incident.
According to the eyewitnesses, the couple had taken a wrong turn leading up to the accident site. Upon realising that, they tried to take a U-turn. Gurmail Singh lost control of the car and the vehicle plunged into the canal. The locals raised an alarm and informed the police.
Doraha station house officer (SHO) Vijay Kumar said they initiated a rescue operation with the help of divers after reaching the spot. After nearly two hours of operations, the divers fished out the bodies and car from the canal.
Police teams identified the victim from the documents recovered from the car and informed their family members.
The SHO added that the bodies have been sent to civil hospital for the post-mortem.
The victims had no child. Bhupinder Singh, nephew of the victims, reached Khanna to record his statement. Bhupinder Singh stated that his uncle Gurmail Singh and aunt Malkit Kaur used to visit a private hospital in Doraha for the treatment. They had left the house in the morning for Doraha. In the afternoon they received news of their deaths from the police.
The victims had no children. Bhupinder Singh, their nephew, reached Khanna to record his statement. He told police that his uncle Gurmail Singh and aunt Malkit Kaur ould frequent a private hospital in Doraha for treatment. They had left the house in the morning for Doraha only for the family to receive the news of the accident in the afternoon.
Notably, it is the second such incident in the past 14 days. Earlier on June 15, a 31-year-old man drowned in the Sirhind Canal near Doraha after a car plunged into the canal. The body was fished out from the canal near Ajnod village on the next day.
