The Commission of Inquiry (CoI) headed by retired high court judge LN Mittal was constituted by the state government on August 18 following a huge public outcry. It was also mandated to suggest deterrent measures to prevent reoccurrence of such incidents and curb illegal mining in that area in future. Initially, the CoI was to complete the inquiry and submit its report to state government within a period of one month. However, the Council of Ministers in October last had extended its term till October 31, 2022.
A January 10 notification ordering the cessation of the CoI issued by the Home department said that the state government is of the opinion that the continued existence of Commission of Inquiry constituted on August 18, 2022 was unnecessary. “Now, therefore, in exercise of powers conferred by Section 7 of the Commission of Inquiry Act, the Governor of Haryana hereby specifies the October 31, 2022, the date from which the Commission of Inquiry constituted vide aforesaid notification shall cease to exist,” the notification said.
