Dean, students welfare, Navdeep Goyal said, “The university is in the process of buying 46 inches and 55 inches LED televisions for the common rooms of all boys’ and girls’ hostels. Nine girls’ hostels will also get three washing machines per hostel. We hope to complete the process by Diwali.”

In the open market the cost of LED televisions to be bought by PU is between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh, while for washing machines it is up to Rs 70,000. PU has invited quotations from contractors for LED TVs, the officials said.

Goyal said, “There have been representations from hostellers to get LEDs for improved quality of viewing.” Regarding washing machines, during elections almost all parties held protests demanding installation of washing machines at hostels. Old machines are either lying defunct or not working properly.

“All girls’ hostel wardens have been told to buy new washing machines or get repaired old ones. We have asked to maintain at least three working washing machines in each hostel.”

Over 7,000 students live in PU hostels on both campuses in 18 hostels, almost half the number of students studying at PU.
