PU dental institute seeks nod for PG courses

DHSJIDS director Ashish Jain said in June this year, the institute had written to the ministry of health, Government of India, seeking permission to offer post-graduate courses in six disciplines. The ministry had then forwarded the letter to DCI.
Jain said, “We are awaiting an inspection of the infrastructure of the college by the DCI team. The two inspections are likely to be over by the year end.” He said from the next academic session, it would offer the PG courses. If the DCI grants permission, the institute would be the
first government college in the tricity to offer post-graduate courses in dental sciences.
Currently, it offers the five-year Bachelors in Dental Sciences courses.The six disciplines planned by the institute for the PG courses would be prosthetics, orthodontics, aerodonetics, conservative dentistry, oral surgery and oral pathology.
Jain said, “We are planning to have three seats in each discipline, that is, a total of eighteen seats for all Master of Dental Sciences (MDS) courses.”
The proposal to start MDS courses at the college was cleared by the PU syndicate in 2012. But officials said it took some time get the required infrastructure for all PG courses in place. The institute has a daily inflow of 400 patients every day, despite it being only specialized government college in the tricity.
Officials said with the introduction of PG courses, its annual revenue deficit, which is over `10 crore, would also witness a decrease. The institute has already constructed six new blocks to conduct classes under these courses. Officials said the college also had the required faculty strength.
A senior PU official said, “We only needed some additional physical infrastructure, which is also in place now.” The official said students would be admitted to the PG courses through an all-India entrance examination.
