The incident took place on February 9, 2016, morning when Dalbir, his wife Gurpreet Kaur, 26, son Kushalvir Singh, 3, sister-in-law Manpreet Kaur, her son Mankeerat, 8, another relative Rajwinder Kaur and her one-year-old son Kamalpreet Singh, had gone to Ratnana village in Nawanshahr to attend a wedding function.
On their way back, Dalbir drove his Maruti Alto car into the canal in a bid to eliminate his wife following a marital dispute, the prosecution stated. He managed to jump out of the car and was rescued by passersby.
Initially, police took it to be an accident, but Manpreet’s husband Jagtar Singh, who was not among the passengers, alleged that Dalbir intentionally drove the car into the canal.
