Core engineering, data analytics top job drivers at IITs this year

Core engineering and data analytics firms will offer most jobs during the final placements across the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), scheduled to start from December. Graduates at these premier institutes can also expect better salaries, compared to last year.

Data analysts, financial management, business analytics, core engineering, and core research and development are among the most sought-after profiles. “At IIT Roorkee, 50% of the companies are looking for software engineer, while 10% are offering data analytics roles,” said professor NP Padhy, in charge of training and placement.

At IIT Guwahati, the demand is high for software developers and coders. “More than 160 companies have registered at IIT Guwahati so far, out of which 60% are offering software development roles. They hire students with expertise in coding,” said professor Kaustubha Mohanty, head, Centre for Career Development.

While at IIT Kharagpur, most profiles on offer are in machine learning, information technology, data analytics and software profiles. At IIT Bombay, core engineering profiles are popular among recruiters.

At a few IITs, more data analytics firms have signed up this year. “Data analytics roles on offer this year are almost three times more than last year,” said professor Padhy.

Without disclosing any details, professor Deb, too, said that data analytics vacancies had come up in all major companies.

“Students across IITs, are looking for stable jobs, they are ready to join established traditional companies even if the package is slightly low as compared to fairly new companies,” said professor Mohanty, who is also the convener of the All IIT Placement Committee, the panel responsible for campus hiring at all IITs. “The salary on offer has gone up marginally, by about five to 10% this year.”

IIT officials are also expecting PSUs to roll out offers this year as the Madras HC dismissed the plea in September 2015 that prevented public sector undertakings to recruit candidates directly from IITs.
