Zombies and sharks to Obama and Palin — Archie comics have had it all. We pick the must-reads.

Why read it now:
, the cartoonist who brought to life Archie Andrews and his friends at Riverdale, passed away on Wednesday (July 22) in Texas. A significant part of our childhood was spent following America’s favourite teenage character and his buddies — Betty, Veronica and Jughead. Here are the ones you should go back to:

* Spire Christian Comics

In this series, published from 1972 to the 1980s, it wasn’t uncommon to see Archie, and the other regulars, pray to the Lord. The themes revolved around Christian morals and incorporated Biblical scripture. A Christ-like figure also makes an appearance in one of the comics.

* Campaign Pains
Only in the Archie universe can rivals Barack Obama and Sarah Palin sip a milkshake together. The political bigwigs lead by example in order to help Archie and his student council opponent, Reggie Mantle, put their differences aside.

* Afterlife with Archie

Can you imagine the laidback Jughead Jones as a zombie? In this series, he leads the dreaded undead. In an alternate reality, the drama unfolds when a zombie apocalypse hits Riverdale. It’s officially not aimed at children.

* George Takei
Kevin Keller was introduced as an openly gay character who advocates LGBT rights. George Takei makes an appearance when Kevin writes a class essay on the Star Trek actor being an inspiration.

* Archie vs Sharknado
Josie and the Pussycats are playing at Riverdale’s prom but Archie and gang are missing. Turns out, a shark-infested tornado (from the Sharknado trilogy) is about to hit Riverdale, and it’s up to them to save the town.
