“I have learnt so much from the character I portray in the film. She is so different from me. She has never known that she has any kind of rights or that she has any power or option. She does not even think that she is valued enough to fit into a certain system. She is someone who has spent an entire life behind a ghunghat and she does not realise that has courage and intelligence. She is a surviver,” shares Bhumi.
The actor, who has to her credit films such as Toilet: k Prem Katha and Shubh mangal Saavdhan, further goes on to add, “After playing this part, I have realised that patriarchy is so deeply engraved in our system and that’s what the film is primarily about. It’s a film that tried to break patriarchy and break any kind of caste divide that we have. But these are things that are very deeply rooted in our brains.”
Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the dacoit drama set amid the backdrop of 1975 also stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Manoj Bajpayee, and Ashutosh Rana.
Praising her director, Bhumi says, “It is so amazing that you have filmmakers like Abhishek, who brings a different narrative every single time. He is so aware of what’s happening and it was so wonderful to work with him.”
The film that released alongside a romantic comedy Luka Chuppi on the same day, might not have had a great run at the box office but Bhumi says people who have watched the film have completely been left with a “lasting impression”.
She shares, “It is not an easy film, it is a film which makes your uncomfortable. It gets you thinking. I am happy with the response. Whoever has watched the film have been overwhelmed by it. It is that kind of response.”
