Sanjay Dutt on Sanju glorifying him: Who would spend ₹30-40 cr for an image makeover?
Sanju, though loved by fans as the box office shows, has been criticised for whitewashing Sanjay Dutt’s image. Now the actor replies to the charge.
Raj Kumar Hirani’s new film Sanju, the biopic of Sanjay Dutt’s controversial life, has been a massive success. The film is inching close to ₹300 crore mark in domestic collections and will end as one of the most successful films of 2018. However, the film has drawn criticism for its simplistic and often sympathetic portrayal of Sanjay Dutt. One of the sharpest criticisms has been that the film attempted to whitewash his image.

Now, for the first time, Sanjay has replied to the question. Speaking to India Today, he said that Munna Bhai was made some years back and that avatar is already out. He also added that nobody would want to spend ₹30 to 40 crore for an image makeover.

“I just want to say that Munna Bhai was already made, that avatar was already out. I don’t think anyone would spend ₹30-40 crore to change his image. That is too much of an amount. I have told the truth and the truth has been accepted by India, and the box office collection shows that.”
On the question if the real Sanjay Dutt is anything like the person portrayed in the biopic, Sanjay replied saying that there was a reason why people in the country like him. That was because there is nothing dark about him. He added that in his growing up years, he was like any other teenager and that there was nothing special about being Sunil Dutt’s son. All make mistakes and he made a few more and went to jail for it, a fact he does not regret.
Speaking about reliving his live through Sanju, he said: “It was difficult to relive that. I was trying to hold back my emotions in the theatre. It is difficult to relive your life. After the film ended, I just broke down. I just couldn’t believe it.”
