Richa Chadha: ‘I am not after roles that you bag through social media’
Richa Chadha says social media has emerged as a tool of sorts for actors, who sometimes might also end up bagging projects because of how popular they are.
In Bollywood today, there is a lot of talk about how actors from all walks of life are getting a chance and how the film industry is moving way from the stereotypes of the image of a typical Bollywood heroine, who is fair and thin. But actor Richa Chadha believes that despite all that, Bollywood still remains to be a looks-oriented industry.

“It’s a visual medium. That’s why I am wearing make-up and sitting in front of you!” she says.
When asked to comment on how some actors say they get ‘typecast’ because makers believe they only suit glamorous roles, Richa says, “I always feel if there is a person only for item songs or whatever, if she really tries and invests in a script, why won’t people take her seriously? It’s also up to the actor. I love dancing, and trained in it, nobody knows this. If I put up a video of me dancing on Instagram, my company will get calls ‘hum isko item songs mein cast kar sakte hain kya?’ It’s a very new thing, but it depends on the person also, how you want to make your career, what are the chances you want to take.”
As Richa puts it, social media has emerged as a tool of sorts for actors, who sometimes might also end up bagging projects because of how popular they are.
“I don’t want those roles,” the 32-year old, actor of acclaimed films such as Masaan (2015) and the Gangs of Wasseypur series is quick to say, “If you are getting a role through that, I don’t want them. What can you show in.. I mean, that you have a good following? Those are not the roles I am after. I am not judging people who get roles like that!”
So, how has she been able to adjust to the aspect of the showbiz where in one has to be visible in the public and interact with fans on social media frequently. Richa says, “That’s a bubble, you don’t have to be active on social media. I was off it for a month, and it didn’t make a difference to my life, apart from the fact that I was very peaceful. It was around the time of elections, and log paagal ho rahe the!”
