Several of Yash Chopra’s works, Deewar (1975), Lamhe (1991), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Chak De! India (2007) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) to name a few, have earned appreciation not only in India, but abroad too. The late filmmaker was also admired by many, and maintained great relations with his colleagues in the film industry. Now, his wife Pamela Chopra is making an effort to keep them alive.
Next month, she will travel to Australia to accept an honour on behalf of her husband, who passed away last October. Chopra is being presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). “Yashji had a close connection with the IFFM. He was happy to support it as he believed in promoting Indian films in foreign countries. I am grateful to the festival and the Victorian government for this honour and happy to travel to Melbourne to collect the same and keep the support and connection alive,” says Pamela.
Pamela Chopra has collected several awards in her late husband’s honour since his passing away, but this is the first time she will travel to a foreign country for the same. This year, IFFM is paying tribute to the filmmaker. “We have been fortunate to enjoy the support and guidance of Yash Chopra. He had very strong ties with Victoria as well, having shot two films, Salaam Namaste (2005) and Chak De! India here. We all miss him very much and this is our small tribute to our much loved festival patron,” says Mitu Bhowmick Lange, IFFM festival director.
