Sharing anecdotes of his childhood, Randeep says, “Both my parents were mostly abroad, first in Iraq, then in Libya. So, I used to live with my grandmother. I remember when I would travel, I’d mostly be alone. My mom would be really worried. While putting me in a flight, she would paste a white doctored tape on my shirt that read - ‘Unaccompanied child’ and it would also have the phone number and the address, just in case I got lost. She used to paste the same thing in all my pockets (laughs).”

Speaking on how his mother, played an instrumental role in his first audition, Randeep says, “My first audition for Monsoon Wedding (2001) materialised because of her. We were leaving back for our hometown Rohtak from our Delhi. She was half-way down the stairs, when I got a call from filmmaker Mira Nair. It was an audition call. From my conversation on the phone she figured out that I was being called for it. She came back with the bag and said, ‘come, let’s go’. I had broken my hand a few days before this, and I might have skipped going for the audition. But my mom not only encouraged me to go for it, but also drove me around.”

“She’s quite a go-getter and I get that a lot from her. She’s very calm and affable and I need to learn that from her. I have a lot to thank her for. Although I have lived away from her for a long time, she was always there for the important things in my life. even now, no matter how hard I try to mask it, she always gets to know if there’s anything wrong just by hearing my voice. My inclination towards arts, and the ambition to grow out of the small town to make it big in life - that drive comes from her. My mother would stand up for me and so would my grandmother. Actually, my grandmother was also my mother, because I lived with her for so long, she took care of me,” he adds.

Ask him if he discusses films with her too, he says, “We don’t discuss that at all. We only discuss after she’s seen it. She doesn’t watch my movies till they come out. But when she watches it, I can see a sense of pride. It’s very heartening. When she saw Jannat 2, she said ‘Beta mujhe nahi pata that u itna emotional hai’,” he says. But there is still an unfulfilled wish sh ehas. “There is this whole thing of ‘get married’ (sic). She keeps sending me pictures of prospective brides (laughs)... she wants me to get married and have children,” he says.
