Kesari box office: Kesari is shaping up to be one of Akshay Kumar’s most successful films in recent times. The war drama has crossed the Rs 80 crore mark in five days of release.

Akshay Kumar’s Kesari is riding the patriotic wave to a solid Rs 100 crore domestic total in one week of release. The film currently stands at Rs 87 crore, after five days. Kesari was released on Thursday, on the occasion of Holi.

According to Box Office India, the film had a ‘fair’ drop on Monday, collecting Rs 8 crore approximately. The film had made over Rs 78 crore by Sunday, and had broken multiple records in the process. Kesari is the biggest opener of 2019, and the second biggest opener of Akshay Kumar’s career, after Gold.

The Anurag Singh film will also be Akshay’s ninth hit in a row after Gold (Rs102.10 crore), Pad Man (Rs 78.22 crore), Toilet Ek Prem Katha (Rs132.07 crore), Jolly LLB 2 (Rs 117 crore), Rustom (Rs 127.49 crore), Housefull 3 (Rs109.14 crore), Airlift ( 128.1 crore) and Singh Is Bliing ( 89.95 crore).

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted that a ‘section’ of the industry believes that the IPL could’ve impacted the film’s Saturday and Sunday figures, and wrote that the weekdays will be crucial.

Box Office India said that the film performed best in the Delhi/Uttar Pradesh/Bihar and Rajasthan circuit. A drop in Mumbai’s numbers was reported, mostly because the film had opened particularly strong there, thanks to Holi.

Kesari was met with a wave of mixed reviews. The film sits at a ‘rotten’ 36% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on 11 reviews. The Hindustan Times review noted, ‘We must salute the brave soldiers of the Saragarhi. This movie merely gives us 21 angry men.’

The film is based on the Battle of Saragarhi, in which 21 Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army who took on an estimated 10000-strong army of Pashtun fighters to defend the fort of Saragarhi in modern-day Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region of Pakistan.
