Kargil Vijay Diwas: Rannvijay Singh says people have forgotten soldiers’ sacrifices

Actor Rannvijay Singh, an army officer’s son, opens up on what his family went through when his father was fighting in the 1999 Kargil War.

Actor Rannvijay Singh might have made a name for himself in the entertainment industry, but what he really wanted to do was serve the country. A proud Army kid, he says, “Five generations of my family have served in the Indian Army, and I would have been the sixth to be a part of it.” The Kargil War, which was fought in 1999 between India and Pakistan, ended with India successfully taking command of the high outposts which had been lost to Pakistani intruders. Rannvijay’s father Lt Gen Iqbal Singh Singha was posted in the Rajouri-Poonch sector at that time. “My father was commanding a regiment, and it was a stressful time for every army family. I was studying in Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan, Delhi, and my classmates and I would discuss what was going on”, he recalls.

Rannvijay, though happy that we are celebrating Kargil Vijay Diwas today in honour of our country’s victory, is miffed with the countrymen’s ungrateful attitude. “At that time, when the whole thing was current, everyone in the country was talking about it, but 17-18 years later, people tend to forget our soldiers’ sacrifice. I don’t know if the people even know what our bravehearts are doing at the borders right now.” But the 34-year old is satisfied that the Army supports its people in every possible way. “The families are connected to each other. Also, the Army infrastructure and organisation in itself gives so much to each other. You do your job and get respect for it from your seniors and your subordinates. Everything that I have in life today, I owe to the Indian Army. Jai Hind”, he signs off.
