His Facebook page has close to 28,000 likes and his ek minute act has prompted a host of jokes and one-liners on the internet, but actor Saswata Chatterjee, who played the poker-faced contract killer in Sujoy Ghosh’s film, Kahaani, says that he will not do a similar role again.
“I don’t think an actor should have any particular image, and that’s the reason I would never take up a similar role again,” says Chatterjee, who has done a variety of roles in Bengali cinema and television, right from playing a romantic hero to comic characters.
The 41-year-old currently plays Bengali detective Byomkesh Bakshi’s aide Ajit in the Bangla film adaptation of the series.
His character Bob Biswas may have gotten pictures of his victims on his mobile phone, but Chatterjee is averse to phones. “How cellphones can be misused is best shown in the film. Besides, I have seen people becoming helpless when they lose their mobiles … it’s worse than drug addiction,” he says.
Ask him how the sudden stardom feels, and he says, “I’m still confused. Never thought Bob would be so big!” And what was his wife Mahua’s reaction? “She freaked out, especially during the scene just before the interval. She grabbed my hand in fear!”
