I’d like to challenge myself as an actor and singer: Ayushmann Khurrana

Ayushmann Khurrana is one of those few B-Town celebrities who are known for both their acting and singing abilities. The actor-singer has sung popular tracks such as ‘Pani da rang’ (Vicky Donor; 2012) and ‘Saadi galli aaja’ (Nautanki Saala!; 2013) and released independent singles including ‘Mitti di khushboo’, all of which fall under the romance genre.

However, Ayushmann would like to experiment as far as singing is concerned. The artiste, who recently toured the US and performed in Dubai, UAE, also recreated some popular ’90s tracks at his concerts. “The magic really happens when you do something different and challenging. I’d like to try different genres. I would like to challenge myself, not just as an actor but also as a singer. I should try out rock and hip-hop as well. That will be interesting,” he says.

The Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) actor says that Bollywood music has grown a lot. “Today, Bollywood music not only includes hip-hop, but also rock and electronic dance music. However, there is more scope in independent music. I still think the independent music circuit is quite niche [in India]. It has to create that mass euphoria, which will be interesting to witness,” says Ayushmann.

Many composers prefer having their own private space and a certain environment to make their music. Ayushmann, however, disagrees, and says he is not fussy about having a particular kind of space.

“An idea can strike you anywhere, anytime. You will be surprised, most of the times I’ve composed songs, I’ve been on a plane. I think about a melody and just save it on my recorder,” says Ayushmann.

“There is no disturbance [on a flight] — no cell phones ringing. Recently, I bought a travel guitar from the US. I carry it most of the time with me. So, I can compose a song anytime,” he says, adding, “But yes, it’s got to do with solitude. When there is no distraction, you can get more creative ideas.”
