‘Ghoomar on Ice’: This skater dancing to Padmaavat song is taking the internet by storm

Ghoomar from Deepika Padukone-starrer Padmaavat may have ruffled a few feathers, but the traditional folk dance of Rajasthan has people grooving to its catchy tune all over.

From cheerleaders dancing during an NBA match to a host of Indian-Americans matching Padukone’s steps in California in the United States, many fans have come up with their own rendition of the hit song.

The recent addition to the list is Las Vegas figure-skater Mayuri Bhandari.

“In honour of the film Padmaavat‘s release, here is my ice skating tribute to the beautiful song Ghoomar! As a Rajasthani, I skate to this song with pride!” Bhandari captioned the 3.32-minute video uploaded on January 31 on YouTube.

The video of Bhandari performing ghoomar on the ice rink in a red costume and ice skates is getting a lot of love on social media. It has been viewed by over 17,000 people.

Ghoomar is chiefly performed by veiled women in flowing skirts called ghaghra.

The Shri Rajput Karni Sena, which led calls for a country-wide ban on Padmaavat, and other caste groups alleged that the film distorts history and the Ghoomar track portrays queen Padmini or Padmavati as a courtesan, saying royal women never performed the traditional folk dance of Rajasthan.

The Karni Sena also allegedly vandalised a school in Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district, where a group of students were performing on the track.

Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was forced to release a “new and improved” version of the song by digitally covering Padukone’s midriff after the outrage.

The fringe group also criticised Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav last year for performing on the song at a private event in Lucknow.
