Gautam Gambhir wouldn’t go to a theatre to watch a biopic on a cricketer

Trust Gautam Gambhir to call a spade, a spade. In times when Bollywood is going gaga over biopics on sports stars — and one on Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is ready — the batsman, who’s known to be a huge movie buff, disapproves of the idea of glorifying a cricketer’s life by making a biopic on it.

“I would never go to a cinema hall to watch a biopic on a cricketer. I am not a big fan of people making biopics on sportsmen, especially cricketers. I think there are far bigger people who have done much more for the country and films should be made on them. Look at the kind of sacrifices people in the defence services make, no one even remembers them. Why don’t people make biopics on the life of a jawaan or a captain who sacrificed his life for the country? I would never want someone to make a biopic on me. If anyone approaches me, I’d ask them to approach someone who has done bigger things in life,” says the cricketer, whose public image is as ‘Gambhir’ as his name — serious and well, at times, arrogant.

The 34-year-old father of a two-year-old daughter says his ‘game face’ has nothing to do with his personality off the field. “Everyone has their own game face. When I go on to the field, it is also like my office. I have to give my 100 per cent and I have to be really committed to it. It’s all about winning. It is about getting into a happy dressing room. I have never heard of anyone getting into a losing dressing room and being happy. It is a competitive sport and you want to beat the opposition each time, so why can’t I have my own game face?” says Gambhir, who by his own admission, prefers watching football or hockey over cricket.

“When I am captaining a side, the way I play would be the way my team plays as well. If I will be joking around all the time, I wouldn’t expect people to take me seriously. There is nothing wrong in playing hard as long as you are playing fair. I am a completely different person off the field and my friends and family can vouch for that,” adds the cricketer, who is the ambassador of Indian Junior Players’ League, T 20 tournament.
