It’s advantage Priyanka as she dances with Deepika in Pinga

While Deepika won hearts with her Deewani Mastani song fromBajirao Mastani, here Priyanka’s the clear winner of the face-off. Looking every bit a Marathi mulgi, she moves gracefully and with elan.

It seems to be 2002 once more as director Sanjay Leela Bhansali brings two Bollywood prima donnas together in a dance face-off. All those years back, it was Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai dancing to Dola Re in the filmmaker’s Devdas. In 2015, the clash is between Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone and the song is Pinga from Bhansali’s labour of love, Bajirao Mastani.

The Bengali setting of Dola Re has been replaced by Marathi sensibilities in Pinga, but the feel is all Bhansali with muted lighting, gorgeous women and more diyas than you care to count. You can sum it up as ‘grand’, Bhansali’s signature style.

The song has Priyanka and Deepika in colour-coordinated sarees as they sing of their love for the same man: The film’s eponymous Bajirao played by Deepika’s real-life boyfriend Ranveer Singh. With the traditional navari (nine-yard) sarees and jewellery sported by women in the region, both the stars look beautiful. This is the first time that Deepika, who is playing a warrior queen in the film, is seen in traditional Marathi get-up.

Choreographed by Remo D’ Souza, the song’s music has been directed by Bhansali and sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Vaishali Made.

The song’s launch event was called off on Saturday in the wake of the Paris terror attack. Eros News tweeted on Saturday, “In the wake of the Paris attacks that happened this morning, we have decided to call off the Pinga song launch that was to happen today.”
