10 top romantic films in last 5 years: Is Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in the list?

With Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil set to hit the screens this Friday, it’s time to ask one question: Will this film find mention among Bollywood’s top romantic films in the last five years? Whatever it’s fate on the box office, ADHM has been high on everybody’s to-do list, and expectations from it are fairly high.

Before the film’s release, let’s take a look at 10 romantic Hindi films that have made millions of hearts melt in last five years.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (2012): Director Shakun Batra’s film is a modern-day take on romance. It doesn’t talk about living together for seven lives, but one life with happiness. Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan played their roles to perfection.

Vicky Donor (2012): This Shoojit Sircar film turned out to be a perfect launchpad for Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam in Bollywood. Based on a controversial theme, this film brought the issue of sperm donation to mainstream discussion. It showed how love is not limited to physical relationship between two people.

Aashiqui 2 (2013): Mohit Suri’s musical got the nation grooving to Ankit Tiwari’s tunes. The songs were such a hit that the film also opened big at the box office. Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur became household names after this film, just like Rahul Roy and Annu Aggarwal, who featured in the original Aashiqui in 1991.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013): Though love stories are Ranbir Kapoor’s comfort zone, Ayan Mukerji explored his range with YJHD. It’s a complicated relationship drama that culminates with Ranbir and Deepika’s re-bonding at a marriage venue.

Dedh Ishqiya (2014): A dark humour, this Abhishek Chaubey film isn’t a traditional Bollywood love story. In fact, it has layered stories, all of them exploring different aspects of love. It also borrowed from Ismat Chugtai’s story Lihaaf.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014): Shashank Khaitan decided to remake one of the most loved Bollywood love stories ever, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, with Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles. Set in Punjab and Delhi, HSKD won hearts for its soft romance and popular songs.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015): One of the most talked about films last year, this Ayushmann Khurrana-Bhumi Pednekar film was based on an odd marriage. Ayushmann doesn’t find his bride from an arranged marriage beautiful, and thus he starts drifting away from her. However, circumstances make them realise the strong bonding them have and they decide to take a fresh start. Sharat kataria directed the film.

Tamasha (2015): Imtiaz Ali has his own way of dealing with romance. He plays with the same theme with excellent twists in his films. Tamasha sees two people meeting in Corsica, but when they meet again in Mumbai, they aren’t the same people. There onwards, it becomes a journey to the centre of their hearts. Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone left their impressions as Tara and Ved in the film.

Bajirao Mastani (2015): The year 2015 belonged to Deepika Padukone, and she finished it with another breakthrough performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial Bajirao Mastani. This period drama is a love triangle between Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. All of them turned out to be the winners at the ticket window.

Aligarh (2016): After Shahid, Hansal Mehta delivered another powerful narrative in Aligarh. This wasn’t a straightforward love story. Rather it tried to explore the meaning of love. Manoj Bajpayee as a gay professor stole the limelight.
