Quiet Aya Nagar in south Delhi charms culturati

Inside the unpaved sewage-filled lanes of the village, one is surprised to find a green gated complex with 21 red-brick individual ultra-modern houses surrounded by thick green bushes. While all of these are not occupied yet, a handful of people living here include architects, budding artists and professors.

The area grew as an unauthorised colony when a large number of migrants from different parts of the country settled here in the 80s. While the village lags behind on the development front, urbanisation has changed its face into a small township with the coming up of several apartment blocks here.(Sanchit Khanna/ HT Photos)

Peace a casualty of Vasant Vihar’s chaos, confusion

Home to Delhi’s former Lieutenant Governor, Tejendra Khanna, Bollywood actor Sharmila Tagore and senior journalists including Karan Thapar and Aroon Purie among others, the locality has eight slum clusters along its boundaries. Illegal constructions, lack of parking space and spilling of traffic from the RTR flyover are slowly robbing the area of its serenity. However, this was not the case decades ago. The colony was developed in the late 1960s by a group of retired central government officers. They formed a cooperative housing society and applied for land to be allotted.
