UMC plans to build transit shelter for victims of building collapses

The death of eight people last week due to collapse of a three-storeyed building in Bhiwandi has brought into focus the recurring incidents of collapses of building and slabs, which have killed and injured many in Ulhasnagar in the last few years. A committee was formed to tackle dangerous and illegal buildings within Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation limits after 38 people were killed in a collapse in September 2020. The rural areas of Bhiwandi were not included in the survey, however, as they come under gram panchayat rule. Activists have called for a policy for buildings and godowns in both urban and rural areas to prevent future tragedies. Orion Business Park blaze: A battle of 10 hours by 90 brave firefighters

A massive fire at Thane's Orion Business Park damaged almost 90% of the commercial building and destroyed 21 office units, three four-wheelers, and 23 two-wheelers. The fire was controlled after a 10-hour-long, multi-agency operation involving 90 firefighters. No casualties were reported as the offices operating out of the building had closed for the day. A suspected blast in an air-conditioner may have caused the fire, and the building materials stored on the premises helped it spread fast.
