Mahapanchayat seeks procurement of sunflower seeds on MSP: Farmers block Delhi-Chandigarh highway at Kurukshetra, traffic diverted

Farmers blocked traffic on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway (National Highway 44) on Monday after holding a mahapanchayat at Pipli grain market in Kurukshetra district to press for minimum support price (MSP) for sunflower seeds.

Farmer leaders, including Rakesh Tikait and Balbir Singh Rajewal, announced from the stage that they will support whatever decision is taken by the local farmers. After repeated meetings with the district administration failed to yield results, farmer leaders gave a call to block the NH 44. Pipli mahapanchayat to push for guaranteed minimum support price

Farmers from Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi will hold a mahapanchayat in Pipli on Monday to demand guaranteed minimum support price for crops. The protest is being held following a lathicharge on farmers protesting for procurement of sunflower seeds at MSP of ?6,400. Farmer leaders have urged farmers to attend the rally, which is being seen as the last attempt to protect MSP, and police have made elaborate arrangements to maintain law and order.

Not happy with compensation, say Haryana sunflower farmers

Haryana sunflower farmers termed it an attempt to thwart their gathering at the Pipli Mahapanchayat called by various farmer associations on June 12. “This announcement will not have any impact on the farmers as the rally is being organised against the police brutality on farmers,” said 67-year-old Pritam Singh of Mahdodan village.

Haryana set to miss its wheat procurement target this year
