Flash strike by Sahara pilots

PASSENGERS ACROSS the country scheduled to fly Air Sahara were stranded on Sunday as pilots went on mass leave, opposing the merger between Sahara and Jet Airways. In Delhi, about 12 Air Sahara flights were cancelled. Only some passengers received prior intimation of the cancellations. Those who had booked their tickets through travel agents were the worst-hit. Most passengers were endorsed to Jet or Kingfisher, subject to availability.

Farah wages lonely battle

LIKE MOST girls her age, Farah Aziz ? a post-graduate student of journalism and mass communication in Aligarh Muslim University ? likes to wear jeans and t-shirts. But her choice of clothes has left her harassed, threatened and created turmoil in the university. On February 2, Farah was assaulted by two students on a bike near the vice-chancellor?s office. They snatched her shawl and fled. Farah promptly reported the matter to V-C Naseem Ahmad and the proctor.Along with her, several other girl students complained of being eve-teased.

Rs 9120-crore plan size okayed

THE PLANNING Commission of India has approved Rs 9120 crore annual plan outlay for Madhya Pradesh, which is 21 percent more than the current plan size. The hike works out to Rs 1649 crore against the current plan of Rs 7471 crore.

In Guwahati and Bhubaneswar, unions went on a "go slow". Till late on Wednesday night, the unions said the strike was indefinite. In Delhi, even as the cabinet approved the entire bidding process for the modernisation of the Delhi and Mumbai airports, the Left softened its stance considerably.

CAL secy rescued; seven kidnappers in police net

SPECIAL TASK force (STF) sleuths on Tuesday night finally succeeded to trace leading timber merchant and Cricket Association of Lucknow (CAL) secretary Khaliq Mukhtar Khan from a hideout in a Patna village in Bihar. The cops not only rescued Khan but also nabbed seven of the gangsters who had kidnapped the victim on December 29 from Varanasi. Five others were also detained along with the kidnappers. About a week back only, the kidnappers had posted a cassette containing recorded voice of the victim, his photograph in detention and a letter carrying a demand of Rs 1 crore ransom.

Centre okays additional troops for Assam as Biharis flee

The Centre on Thursday agreed to deploy six additional BSF companies in Assam to bring an end to the violence directed at Biharis. They will be deployed in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts in the next few days. Meanwhile, hundreds of Biharis have started fleeing Assam. Trains leaving Assam are at full capacity, a railways spokesman said. "Seats are already full in all the trains," he said.

INDIA sprung a surprise on Pakistan on Wednesday by announcing 12 peace proposals with a view to taking forward Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee?s April 18 Srinagar initiative. All the proposals, announced by External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha at a press conference here, are aimed at increasing people-to-people contacts. The minister said the proposals were part of the ?normalisation process? to take the Indo-Pak relationship back to the pre-December 13, 2001 situation.
