Modi’s shuffled babus get a big dose of reality

Welcome in earnest to the Narendra Modi regime. If the 'Babudom' felt bored by the 'Chalta hai' attitude of the previous UPA dispensation, the NDA brought a whiff of fresh air. After a long time, the bureaucrats found their voice with the Prime Minister engaging them directly, sometimes even keeping the ministers at bay.

Bihar: Views on land bill, ties with RJD denting Nitish's popularity

Weeks ahead of Bihar’s assembly election, Nitish Kumar seems to be losing the trust of the state’s zealous young generation that once saw in him a “vikas purush”, or “man of development”. While growing aspirations of the youth and his alliance with Lalu are said to have dented his appeal, the Chief Minister also seems to have slipped on delivery.

Caste realignment in Bihar is a new worry for Nitish, Lalu

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s narrative of “two Indias” seems to be resonating, though in a different form, in poll-bound Bihar with the emergence of a new, aspirational class threatening to unravel the caste calculations of the so-called secular and not-so-secular blocs.

Proactive PMO leaves ministries perplexed

Hours before the Cabinet met on Wednesday, a senior functionary at the prime minister's office (PMO) rang up women and child development (WCD) minister Maneka Gandhi's office. He told one of her aides about the changes in the draft Juvenile Justice Bill that was to be cleared by the Cabinet in the evening. The WCD official was instructed to prepare a press note in advance and send it to the PMO for clearance. As it happened, the Cabinet met in the evening, approved the draft bill and the already-prepared press note was out in no time.

PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi continue to deliver from old scripts

It was certainly a hot Sunday in the national capital with rising political temperatures. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi — back after his nine-day foreign tour — addressed BJP MPs at the Parliament’s Balayogi auditorium, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi — back after a six-week sabbatical — addressed farmers at the Ramlila Maidan, there was heightened suspense and expectation in political circles.

Rahul Gandhi profiling ‘as usual’ defence doesn’t stick, invites widespread outrage across party lines

The 'profiling-as-routine' explanation of the alleged snooping on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi offered by the Delhi Police and NDA hasn't washed. The outrage continues to froth across political and ideological lines, and is likely to resonate in Parliament beginning Tuesday. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may well be forced into a defensive posture, given the adverse and rather widespread reaction.

Jaitley's budget speech focuses on development, not politics

Analysts scrutinising Arun Jaitley’s Budget speech for ideological and political content ran instead into three non-political words: job (16 times), growth (24 times) and investment (50 times). With no assembly election imminent, this was clearly a Budget intended to reflect Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s politics of development. The coming years, when politics will dominate, may be different.
