Jet, Sahara in court; deal dead

WITH ITS deal with Jet Airways almost dead, Air Sahara has said it will run its airline on its own from Thursday. This came even as the two parties took the Rs 2,300-crore deal to the courts on Wednesday. Air Sahara's confidence that it can handle things on its own perhaps comes from the gains it has made in the deal. Contrary to popular perception, Air Sahara has already pocketed Rs 780 crore which includes Rs 280 crore investment made by Jet (now written off) in the company over the past five months and a cash transfer of Rs 500 crore.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has called a high-level meeting, to be chaired by secretary V.K. Duggal, on Wednesday to thrash out the security concerns being raised by different government departments on Jet chief Goyal's antecedents, as also the proposed Rs 2,300 crore deal. MONDAY WAS no better than Thursday or Friday on the Sensex. After a free fall of 1,111 points, trading was suspended for the first time since May 17, 2004, and only the second time in the history of the bourse. Be it margin calls or bears smelling blood on Dalal Street, in an unprecedented selloff, the Sensex hit the lower circuit filter of 10 per cent. This stopped the BSE machine in its tracks, halting trading for one hour.
