Webspotting: We scour the internet for the good stuff

The best from the web, tailored for you.

The Fall: A misogynistic serial killer is on the loose in Belfast, Ireland. He’s brutally killing young professional women. Appointed with the task of arresting him is a feminist detective – she’s trained in catching serials killers, opinionated, and indifferent to public opinion. The treatment of the story, at times, suggests that the makers were almost tempted to add a forbidden love story between the killer and detective. The refreshing lack of the same, though, is what makes The Fall worthwhile. Gillian Anderson as the female lead, not surprisingly, is believable as the independent, career-oriented single woman. The surprise element, however, is delivered by Jamie Dornan (otherwise known for the erotica 50 Shades of Grey). His acting skills will have you wonder why he opted for something as incredulous as 50 Shades.

Virtual walls

How would you like to virtually build the Mexico-border wall proposed by President Trump? Choose the height, the raw material, and even decorate the massive structure. All in real time, courtesy Google’s 360-degree image mapping. A virtual reality website will let you do all the above, and also throw in an estimate of the cost of the project. Based on a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the site busts Trumps claims of building the wall between $8 billion to $12 billion, by estimating the cost of construction above $150 billion. It also provides alternate avenues where the money could be put to better use – in building new hospitals, schools, affordable homes, and industrial outlets.

Mapping fictional universes

Game of Thrones season 7 is set to release later in the year, as opposed to its usual April-May cycle. In the meantime, however, you might want to brush up on the characters, their story arcs, and more importantly, understand the geography of GRR Martin’s universe. An interactive website has you covered: it lets you visit all the major locations - Kings Landing, The Wall, Winterfell, Valyria. Additionally, it tells you all about the characters that are currently present there. For instance, put the cursor on Winterfell, and you will be up to speed with Jon Snow and Sansa Stark’s reign over the northern castle. A pop-up window lets you read up on the character’s story so far, and throws in additional information of their lineage.
