Bandra’s alternate performance venue, The Hive, is set to shut on November 30. Founder says they’re looking for a new address. Meanwhile, will collaborate with other venues on pop-ups.

In September 2013, the city’s culture landscape got a boost with the setting up of The Hive, Bandra. The venue soon became a home and breeding ground for all things alternative — be it busking by amateur musicians, an LGBT-friendly art and culture festival, or underground rap battles. And not to forget the experimental: The Hive has hosted a poetry open mic in a dark room, and has seen stand-up comedians try out new material to a small crowd.

On November 30, The Hive will shut shop. “We now need to relocate to a better facility. While we love the area, sustainability in the current location is the biggest challenge we are facing. For The Hive to grow, it needs to move out of the space,” says Sudeip Nair (36), founder. Nair is looking at Andheri and areas such as Ballard Estate and Fort.

In the meantime, The Hive will organise a series of pop-up performances across the city. The gigs, called Hive Around Town, will include regional theatre, curated comedy programming, storytelling, workshops and various performances. “We’re in conversation with a few venues,” says Nair.

A large part of The Hive’s current programming will shift to Cuckoo Club, The Hive’s black box theatre in Bandra. The venue will host The Big Mic gigs (open mic for poetry, rap, comedy) and, like The Hive, also feature a co-working space and a small canteen. “Depending on the size and layout of the space, we will focus on art, education and technology,” says Nair.
