Quick guide to spot carbide-ripened mangoes

Lifestyle coach Luke Coutinho reveals simple ways to spot mangoes ripened with chemicals such as carbide.

Carbide-ripened mangoes often have a very even skin colour.

Tiny black spots can also appear. It’s a sign of chemical ripening.

Gently press the mango. A natural mango feels slightly soft but firm.

Try the water test. Fill a jar with clean water.

Drop the mango gently into the jar. If it floats, it has less pulp. It may be ripened with carbide.

Always inspect closely. Choose mangoes that pass the simple checks.
