6 things to know about ISRO's Aditya L1 mission

The Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO's) maiden solar mission- Aditya L1 successfully entered the Halo orbit, around the L1 point on January 6, 2024.

Here are 6 things to know about ISRO's Aditya L1 mission.

Aditya L1 is ISRO's first space mission aimed at studying the Sun. It was launched on September 2, 2023, from Sriharikota with space vehicle PSLV-C57.

Aditya L1 will be placed in the halo orbit around the Lagrange point (L1) of the Sun-Earth system (1.5 million km from Earth). The final manoeuvre to the L1 point will take place on January 6.

The Lagrange Point (L1) is a region where gravitational forces between the Earth and the Sun reach equilibrium. This unique point provides a stable position for observational purposes.

A satellite around the L1 point will observe the Sun without any eclipses and study solar activities and their real-time effect on space weather.

Four payloads will directly study the sun and the remaining three payloads will carry out in-situ studies of particles and fields at the L1 point.

The objective of the Aditya L1 mission include studying chromospheric and coronal dynamics, in-situ particles and the plasma environment of the Sun.
