Meet Grandmaster Koneru Humpy: India’s queen of chess

Koneru Humpy is one of the world’s top chess players, renowned for her incredible achievements and records in the game.

Humpy pulled off a sensational win in New York, being crowned FIDE Women’s World Rapid Champion for the second time, after first winning in 2019.

At 37, Koneru Humpy sealed the title by defeating Irene Sukandar.

Although Humpy started with a loss, she stayed calm and strong on Day 2, making a great comeback to win the title.

In 2002, at just 15 years Humpy became the youngest woman ever to achieve the title of Grandmaster.

Koneru Humpy is also the first female Grandmaster from India, paving the way for future generations of women in chess.

Humpy’s successes go beyond titles, as she is also a gold medalist at the Chess Olympiad, Asian Games, and the Asian Chess Championship.

As of now, Koneru Humpy holds the title of Women’s Rapid World Chess Champion.

In 2006, Humpy became the second female chess player ever to surpass a 2600 Elo rating, following in the footsteps of Susan Polgar.
