How to answer ‘tell me about yourself'. Harvard’s golden tips

Most interviews start with “Tell me about yourself.” It sounds simple, but it’s your chance to make a strong first impression.

“Tell me about yourself” seems like a friendly question, but it’s open-ended and tricky to answer well.

Should you talk about your life, your last job, or your hobbies?

If you’re in the room, you’re already qualified. Now, it’s about showing that you’re the right match.

Read the job description and highlight what’s “required”, “must have”, or “highly desired”.

Start with “I’m someone who…” or “At work, my approach is…”, then give a real example that shows you’ve done similar work before.

Pick a story from your past job that matches their role. Show how you solved problems or added value.

Practise your answer before the interview. Keep it short, confident, and focused on meeting their needs.
