5 Waterborne diseases to watch out for during monsoon

Waterborne diseases and infections spread rapidly during the monsoon season due to water contamination

Here are some of the waterborne diseases one must watch out for during the rainy season

Cholera

Cholera is a diarrheal illness caused due to consumption of food and water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria

Leptospirosis

This disease is caused when one comes in direct contact with water or soil contaminated with Leptospira bacteria. It is also caused by eating or drinking contaminated food and water

Dysentery

Dysentery is a bacterial and parasitic ailment caused due to poor water sanitation and hygiene and having contaminated food and water

Typhoid

Typhoid fever is caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the bacteria Salmonella typhi. Avoid having street food and follow a strict personal hygiene to avoid getting infected with this bacteria

Hepatitis-A

Hepatitis-A is a liver infection caused when one comes in a direct contact with an infected person. It is also caused by the ingestion of contaminated food and water

It is important to maintain proper personal hygiene and sanitation, especially during monsoon to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases

One must also take care of food safety when cooking and may even consider getting vaccinated to fight these infections
